Why BIM & Digital Engineering?

It’s a modern term for a discipline of of digital skill-sets & technology. For those who are familiar with BIM already, DE (Digital Engineering) is synonymous with and the next evolution of BIM (Building Information Modelling).

Primarily we use common 3D modelling environments to communicate instead of published drawings. Some projects can even  be real-time collaborative using the internet. It makes collaboration far easier than before, referring to the same set of coordinated virtual models, streamlining the use of more reliable data.

BIM

OUR TECH.

We invest in up-to-date tech so you don’t have to.

EYE WITNESS

Elite Survey where mobilized late in the construction of the New M5 tunnel. They were asked to complete a laser scan of the tunnel, BIM modelling of installed ITS assets and then design/clash resolution with the detailed designer AJJV. Elite under extreme time pressure completed the work, collaborated with all parties and solved all the ITS installation issues including redesigning all Back Lit Signs locations, solving all sight line issues with every ITS asset to ensure tunnel would pass road safety audit to allow tunnel opening. Elites contribution to the project was of the highest standard.

FAQ

Questions deserve answers.

It’s a science of working smarter, not harder. We organise data in a 3d model and leverage that data rich model to make our jobs easier and achieve higher quality results. Reality Capture is a big part of Digital Engineering. it is about capturing the real world for use in the 3D model for accuracy. This does provide a base to make unique innovations to the way we do our jobs, no matter the industry sector. I would say the greatest single benefit is the reduction of re-work because you can make all the mistakes in the model; for far less than on-site. Be sure you’re not left behind!

Yes. Who doesn’t want to work smarter and NOT harder? All of us. It’s a more intelligent process for getting the job done than what’s been available before. It’s more efficient, higher quality & cost less overall when you think of the budget blow-outs from uncoordinated designs and subsequent re-work.

BIM/DE gives the built environment a common ground for the very complex data management of projects throughout their life cycle. Using one 3D environment, we can co-ordinate all built aspects of a construction project to maximise efficiency and mitigate re-work. This requires unison in adoption of BIM technologies and processes across industries to be fully leveraged.

We are getting closer to the ideal scenario. The evolution of processes for fabrication and trades are being addressed with Digital Engineering.

Computer Aided Design is basically 2D drafting on a computer. Most of the CAD programs now have BIM capabilities, although under utilised. CAD is slowly dying out as projects require a level of accuracy and co-ordination only BIM can provide. Most Tier 2 projects in Australia now require everything designed & built as a coordinated 3D model, all the way through to handover to the client. Don’t risk being a CAD dinosaur..they’re soon to be extinct.

It’s using tech like a laser scanner or an imaging aerial drone to document the real world and co-ordinate designs with. It relates very closely with Surveying as without surveying methods, there’s no way to accurately QA the data and therefore no accurate way to ensure it’s being viewed in the same co-ordinates as the real world.
